Hairspray

So the movie Hairspray has been getting high rotation in my house lately. We rented the original 1988 version from NetFlix since my husband hadn’t seen it. I figured it was better to see the John Waters version first before the 2007 version. Well, we rented the new version, and I realized about 3 minutes into it that we needed to buy it. We got our own copy this week and so far today my daughter has memorized most of the dance moves and songs.

What I’m waiting to see is if she gets the ‘bigger’ message of the movie – the racial issues that were prevalent from when her grandmother was a teenager and the issue of the lead character’s weight. I think she does. Right now she’s just too enthralled with the idea that a man is playing the mother’s part. Lord help me if she ever figures out who Divine is…
