In general I agree with you. Not the best way to establish a lucid business conversation. I was in advertising/marketing for over 20 years and I can tell you this approach would not have been well-received either short-term or long-term. Business (as well as Twitter) is built on mutual respect and trust. It's hard for companies to "trust" mommybloggers, or whatever you want to call it, when they YELL. I do think that part of this is heavy Social Media users trying to "teach" the big guys/businesses about why they should use Social Media (like Twitter). I'm not saying this was the intent, but if there are enough firestorms on Twitter, companies will end up having to hire "experts" in Twitter to prevent problems. We all know that is a growing industry, Social Media Experts. On the other hand, the beauty of Twitter is is does provide an active forum for the exchange of ideas - so that would include being upset or glad about something. It's a mixed bag of issues. I'm enjoying the discussion though!

There is a graphic available - I wish I had the link - that shows "first tweets" for #motrinmoms. It shows a staggering number of entries over time. So when you say "blown out of proportion," I want to point out that it wasn't just a few moms going on and on and on, it was many many moms (and dads) weighing in at least once.

To me, that's part of the interesting phenomenon of twitter. Anybody can hop on and voice an opinion. When many people are talking about the same thing at once, it becomes a very active topic. I wouldn't call this "blown out of proportion," however. I would say it struck a nerve with some, caused others to ask questions, and caused still others to chime in and tell the first group they were overreacting. It just all happened in a very short amount of time.

I agree with the "mob mentality" observation, we need to be careful what we retweet, hash mark, etc. etc.

Does Twitter need a Snopes-like filter?
