I can attest that sitting from 9am until about 11pm (yes, I do get up!) can physically wreck you. If you spend any significant amount of time sitting at your desk (I'm lookin' at you Hangout marathon peeps!), a couch, or in a car, this +Lifehacker article is really something I think you should read.

There are real dangers in sitting too long. Leaning on your arms all day typing at a desk can really mess up the nerves in your hands (trust me on this – and the surgery to stop the damage doesn't look like a picnic either). Sitting too much without moving wrecks your hips and lower back. Our bodies were meant to walk and move upright – despite the few people I know that still seem to be knuckle-draggers <grin>.

    Well said . I think there is an alternative to this as according to my experience. I ain't no professional athlete, but I do jogging and walking for 2 hrs in morning and 2 hrs in evening. Average distance i cover daily is 15 km.

    Alternative:First kneel on the floor, folding your legs underneath your thighs, while resting the buttocks on the heels. The ankles should be turned outward and the tops of the feet lowered so that, in a slight "V" shape, the tops of the feet are flat on the floor and big toes are overlapped, and the buttocks are finally lowered all the way down. The back is to be kept straight.

    Sit in this position for as long as you can, anywhere whether sitting on bed/sofa/ chair/carpet.

    Since I started working 4/10s I needed something to remind me to get up and move at regular intervals. So I installed an Android app, "Coffee Break" which I have set every hour, reminding me to get up and walk around for a few minutes.

    My office is starting to look at installing standing desks. To get things started I made a simple 16" hgh wooden addition to my desk. It looks like an oversized lectern. After I plugged in an additional monitor, key board and wirelss mouse. I can stand at the wooden lectern or sit at the lower computer and still get all my work done. Easy to do and all spare parts. We will buy good looking commercial standing desks in the future for around $1000. I can already feel the benifits of less neck pain just by standing for most of the day. It works, give standing desks a try.

    Love this point! My husband has back surgery 2 years ago and the surgeon told us that sitting was 1 of the worst thing you can do to your back. While recovering a guy in my husbands office built him a standing desk that was meant to be temporary but he still uses it today in an effort to be healthier and avoid future back issues.

    I read a similar article last year and promptly changed out my desk chair for an exercise ball. That made a big difference, but it took a while to get used to it.

    The link shows what sitting posture i meant earlier. It's damn good. It increases blood circulation & burns more calories than standing (but less than walking(.

    You are a hell lot physically fit if you can sit in this posture continuously for 1 hour.

    Pls ignore the bending of back and the tea kettle in the pic. Your back should be perfectly straight.
