When you reach a certain number or 'level' of public speaking engagements, you need to be paying attention to the very things +Mitch Joel brings up in his article. Once you get to Mitch's level you have the ability to require certain setups such as a wireless mic (or spring the cash to bring your own) and limits on A/V run-throughs, etc.

My favorite : Download videos. Holy cow does it drive me INSANE when attending a presentation or talk and the YouTube video queued up … stalls … buffers … jitters … and never plays.

Try KeepVid.com or search for a Chrome or Firefox plugin. ALWAYS use a video downloaded to your laptop rather than assuming that hotel / conference WiFi is going to be able to play your 1080p video on the fly. Also, please, if you are only using part of a video to play in your presentation, either write down the time stamp and jump & play the video at that point or edit the video beforehand to only use the clip you want. My rule of thumb is not to use a video longer than 2-3 minutes long, but that may change depending on your topic or audience.
